18 JULY 2009 - SASDCI Annual Picnic

Westview Park (Mira Mesa)
Address: 11278 Westview Pkwy, San Diego, CA 92126

Little San Antonian Plays NBA Halftime

Felix Lolo Mejica, only 5 years old, was invited to show basketball fans how to dribble – not only one or two, but three balls. The exhibition happened during halftime game between Washington Wizards and Charlotte Bobcats back in March.

The youngest child of Gladen Mejica (former Sanggunian Member of San Antonio) and Judith Canonizado Lolo loves to play basketball. He's been practicing how to play the game along with his older brother until people started noticing his natural talent in dribbling. Recently, he's been invited to do demonstrations close to where they live in Maryland.

Felix is the grandson of Felix and Ester Canonizado Lolo of San Antonio. To view the amazing halftime performance of Little Boy Dribbler, click on the link below:

LASA's 21st Anniversary

by Chi Padua

Congratulations to the officers, organizers, and parents of the Barangay Princes and Princesses that came together to be able to have a successful 21st anniversary celebration. Thanks to the hard work of San Antonians of Ventura County led by their Executive Chairperson Salve Quintos Vindua, assisted by her Vice-Chairperson Doris Evangelista Menga, their fiesta celebration will be hard to beat. The dinner-dance was packed with loyal San Antonian members from San Diego to NorCal, parents and their friends, and of course, the pretty and handsome young ones that represented each Barangay of our town San Antonio for the association's fund raising.

Princess Raegyne and Prince Andrei
The picnic, held at a very nice park and chaired by their diligent Vice-President Norman Cabiles, was so special in many ways. The Sunday Mass was officiated by Fr. Kenny. Wonderful entertainment featured Philippine folkdance by the Zambales Youth Dance Group that included the children and grandchildren of the Quintos-Paras-Ferrer-Callo-Santilla and other families based in Oxnard. There were plenty of games that got the children excited and worked-up to enjoy all the snow cones and cotton candy after. Food was prepared from sun-up to sun-down: crabs, kilawin, papaitan, lechon, kaldereta, dinengdeng, broiled fish, seaweeds, steak... and the list goes on, thanks to the generosity of Roland and Norma Evangelista Gipulan for donating $1,000 for the picnic.

Tribute Letter to Fresnel Evangelista
by Maria Paz Alvero Vigo

I was in high school at the Luzon Technical Institute when the name, Fresnel Evangelista rung in my ears. I have heard of his community and political endeavors two or three times when I was in college. But when I personally experienced working with him as EXECOM (Executive Committee) member of the LTI Alumni Association in 1999-2003 that’s where I truly found the depth and width of this man's vision and determination to fulfill his God-given burden for his hometown, San Antonio. His unending passion to help the youth through various alma mater projects at LTI, gave hope and opportunity for many of them to succeed.
• Career planning Seminars for the 3rd and 4th year students were administered to help in college placements.

• He assisted in coordinating the Alumni Association projects which were focused on various educational outreach programs

In addition to his community services that assisted the youth, he tirelessly endeavored in the political arena to expose the many injustices that he saw were prevalent in his community. Though he ran numerously for various offices and was defeated, he never lost his zeal and passion to complete his vision. He was a great leader, a team player, a man of vision and determination who finished well. His legacy will live on in the lives of those who, like me, were lit by the flame of this man's life.

One of the fondest memories I have of Manong Fresnel is the various group meetings we had at his cottage. I would remember at the backyard, Coke and beer was always present to keep the meeting lively and productive. Pulutan was also a must!!! In closing, though he was not perfect, he was very humble, a man of integrity, and a mentor I will always cherish. This is who Fresnel Evangelista was to me.
