From the Editor – Chi Padua

11 MAY 2007

While the Democrats in the House of Representatives scramble to look into financing several more months a very unpopular war with Iraq, our brave soldiers are putting up with so many inconveniences, not to mention putting their precious lives in line to protect the ideals of democracy. Starting this month "A Soldier's Journal" straight from Iraq is a must read for us to get a glimpse into the kind of danger these young American soldiers face each day they are deployed in the war zone.

Spring time is "gardening time" and also the time when those wonderful springtime vegetables perfect for preparing the Ilocano Dinengdeng is available in most Asian grocery stores and swap meets in most bigger cities in California. Savor the delicious concoction of fish and vegetable stew with Bagoong and learn to cook Dinengdeng. Fresh "Saluyot" and ampalaya or bitter melon are always a perfect combination. Visit our Recipe section to learn more the other better vegetable combinations for a perfect Dinengdeng.

Our good neighbor the Los Angeles San Antonians will be featuring a Cultural Show during their Dinner-Dance titled "Bagong Anyo – Bagong Sigla" on May 26, Saturday at the Carson Civic Center. Tickets are selling for $40.00 per person. Visit their website for more details.

Election in the Philippines will be something to watch this coming week. We always think that our family and friends and most fellow Filipinos will have learned from their past experiences and vote wisely. But do they? I do not have the correct data to prove otherwise for there always have been charges of gross cheating during vote counting. Many have complained about the outcome of election results for the past decade, but one has not observed their enthusiasm for change despite indications that there was no progress and San Antonio is still wanting of so many basic social services. During the 2007 national and local elections we hope that the people will choose wisely for their own sake.
