Oldies but Goodies... 'twas truly gooood man

by Chi Padua

2006 SEP 2, San Diego - Dancing to the tunes of yesteryears made the 26th SASDCI Dinner-Dance a memorable one. We were delighted to see the San Antonians get into the groove by dressing-up to the fashion of the 1950s, '60s, '70s, and the '80s. It was a fun filled September evening (Saturday, September 2nd) at the Holiday Inn By the Bay. Alice Pascasio Peregrino gave the Welcome Remarks... not only because she works at Holiday Inn By the Bay that she gave everyone a warm welcome but appropriately because she is the Chairman of the Board of Directors.

As the guests enjoyed the tender and juicy prime rib with gusto, they were serenaded by the wonderful singing voice of Maria Paz Alvero - who just two weeks ago arrived in San Diego to be with her Mom Madam Femia Alvero and other members of her family. Maria Paz is a graduate of the University of the Philippines Conservatory of Music. With her educational and professional background, she plans to open a studio in the future to coach future singers.

Close to 240 people witnessed the induction of the new officers for 2006-2008 headed by its new president Allan Pascasio Manangan. The son of Aning and Nestor Manangan has served the San Antonians in various official capacities and he was one of the younger members since he started joining the organization’s activities when he was only in his teens. He served as the first Editor of the San Antonians Newsletter. Allan was also previously elected member of the Board of Directors before finally becoming the 5th president of SASDCI. Inducting Official was Los Angeles San Antonians President Ferdinand Canonizado. After the inauguration Miss San Antonio 2005 Jessica Carroll gave each officer, including her Mom Emma Arlantico Carroll (PRO), a gift.

The guests raved about the GREASE dance number performed by the officers led by outgoing president Ernie Padua, who was also initiator of this year's Oldies but Goodies theme. Other members of the dance group were: Alice Peregrino and Joven Olegario, Ben and Mina Maggay, Allan and Flor Manangan, Marie Flaviano and R amon Galang, Nena and John Caceres, Medy and Lito Pascasio, Pany Padua and Linda Rafanan, Rowena and Joey Casiano, Chi Padua, Marinella Padua, and, Daniel Verango. The group was thankful to the expertise and patience of dance choreographer Mar Duque, who was a member of the University of the East Dance Company and also worked as choreographer for ABS-CBN.

Who could forget "The Limbo Rock?" People lined-up to test their agility and nimbleness... forgetting their aching and stiff backs just to have a try under those bamboo poles. We witnessed the dexterity of Norcal's Eddie ('di pahuhuli) Paulo; "how low can you go" Frank Asanas; and "not-so-nimble-not-so-quick" Monet Duque. The lines were long, the prize was a bottle of wine... but there was only one winner... from Norcal: Armando Aquisap.

The people came in period costumes which was wonderful because now we do affirm that the San Antonians love to party. Prizes were given out to two winners (male/female) for best costume. The contenders were asked to promenade around the dance floor before the judges made their final choices: Faye Shawntel Corprew (granddaughter of newly-elected officers Frank and Adela Hernandez) for the gals; and Johnny Caceres for the guys. Board of Director Conching Pascasio was a close contender for choosing to wear a vintage dress - something she first wore in 1962 when she came to the United States.

Wowwowee has Luningning (even 2-year-old Yuri knows)... SASDCI has "Coringring" You could not have more fun than watching whom Espie Alegado Ridgely called: a second-rate trying hard copycat of Luningning (all in the script folks). Coringring was no other than Cora Lego, wife of SASDCI Auditor Jess Lego, who was also the emcee for the night along with Business Manager Rowena Casiano. This was done in good humor and one couldn’t find another person that night that was such a good sport more than Cora a.k.a. "Coringring."

Ben Maggay, who was reelected to serve as Vice-president for the next two years, delivered the Closing Remarks. The Pacific Ballroom was booming with oldies music until 1 A.M. and we are happy to have met our bar minimum of $750, thanks to our guests like Ben Yambao, Efren Pascasio, Cocoy Radoc, Richard Casiano, and the other gentlemen who helped us meet the quota.

May you all join us again next year.

Condrado Pascasio Celebrates 75th Birthday
by Chi Padua

2006 SEP 6, Chula Vista - Just two days after stepping off the plane at LAX, Tata Condring was already blowing the candles atop his Tiramisu birthday cake. Talk about celebrating with family. On Friday morning, September 1st he was enjoying his Manila Bulletin while sipping his cup of Nescafe in San Antonio. On Sunday afternoon, September 3rd, with his wife Ador by his side, tata Condring was already entertaining his guests in Chula Vista, California at the residence of Albert and Emiluz.

Tata Condring wasn't the only one doing the entertaining... he was also entertained by his guests. His Abalayan Conching Reyes read a poem for The Man of the moment while Grandson Luigi sang Poprocks and Coke.

Of course, the medley of Ilocano Songs by family and friends led by Alice Pascasio-Peregrino and Ernie Padua made the celebrant smile and hum to the good old tunes. Among those in the impromptu choral group were: Gigi and Libby Lucero, Flora Justiniano, Efren Pascasio, Titang Evangelista, Ador Arino, Nena Ferrer Novilla, Kelly Canonizado, Lily Canonizado-Villamayor, Lerida Magsaysay, and Norma Canonizado-Paulo.

Grandsons Alberto Luiz (Luigi) and Andrei Yuri were glad to help their Lolo blow his birthday candles while son-in-law Albert was just ready to assist in cutting the cake. While loving wife Adore made sure that the buffet table is well-replenished with the lechon, chicken cordon blue, pasta, salad, fruits, and many more... daughter Emiluz made sure the guests took turns in the karaoke singing and that guests received a box of the give-away confection and a bagful of food-to-go.

Among the other San Antonians spotted at the party were Medy and Lito Pascasio, Joey and Rowena Casiano, Ben and Mina Maggay, Norma and Eddie Paulo of Vallejo, Conching Pascasio, Ferdz Canonizado, Monett Duque, Mar Duque, Boo and Leesa Lee with daughter Ruby, Alice Licudan with Mom Luz Estacio-Canonizado and daughter Hazel, Lucia Justiniano and daughter Lorna Pascasio, Perla and Manny Orquia, Venencio Novilla and family, and Sonny Justiniano.
