Flores de Mayo, 14 May 2006
The San Antonians of San Diego held its first ever Flores de Mayo on May 9th of 2004. The event,
titled "Alay kay Inay" Talent Show and Flores de Mayo, received positive and encouraging response
from those who participated in the affair. It was the first “Idol Show” sort of experience for
the performers ranging from age five to over 75.
For this year’s Flores de Mayo, not only will the San Antonians pay tribute to the Inays (Mothers)
but the show will pay homage to all MOTHERS: Mothers, Grandmothers, Motherland (Philippines)
and Mother Earth. While some Sagalas will be wearing the traditional formal gowns for the
Flores de Mayo, a few may be wearing either period or regional costumes from the Philippines or
costumes depicting nature’s gifts.
When: Sunday, May 14, 2006 (2:00 P.M. – 5:00 P.M.)
Where: Performing Arts Center of Eastlake High School

We Care 4 Day Care
In 2004 you supported We Care 4 Day Care. Because of the generosity of the San Antonians, the
project was a tremendous success. We are appealing to your charitable hearts once more. On
May 14th, we are launching Books for San Antonio that will also benefit the newly constructed
public library. Teachers and indigent students in San Antonio are in dire need of educational
and other school materials.
+++
Donate your used BOOKS, backpacks, crayons, pens and pencils, art materials, scissors, glue,
rulers, and other items that make school fun and easy! We need slightly used dictionaries,
encyclopedia, and other reference books for the Public Library. SASDCI will take care of
shipping your donations to San Antonio!

I Weep
by Alberto Luiz Pascasio Reyes
All black. Depressing and dreary sight. Tears hitting the ground.
My heart is hardened because of the anguish I feel.
The moon and stars are hiding behind the soft blankets in the night sky.
No light. A shadow is cast over all who are sleeping.
Solitude and an eerie silence conjuring a somber feeling.
God is watching as I mourn for my loss.
We are all mortals. Only mortals. We feel pain both inside and out.
The inconvenience of a cut. The agony of a hole in your heart.
Like something is missing.
They say if someone dies the memory of them lives on. That isn’t true for me.
I had little time to spend with him. That time is a blur in my mind.
Fate is cruel taking away a loved one. Death’s toll is unpredictable.
A single second is a barrier between life and death.
A single second is all it takes for your heart to stop, for your blood to freeze.
For him I weep.
-- About the Author --
In celebration of National Poetry Month, we are publishing here a poem written by our very own
Alberto Luiz Pascasio Reyes.
This poem by 6th Grader Luigi P. Reyes was written in memory of the passing of his grandfather
Federico M. Reyes. It was selected as one of High Merit and was chosen for publication in the
Fall 2005 hardbound anthology "A Celebration of Young Poets."
Luigi's talent in poetry is no surprise for his Lolo Condring Pascasio is a poet and had mastered
the "DANIW" – an extemporaneous poetry in Ilocano extolling Beauty Queens. Tata Condring's
recent poem, giving tribute to SASDCI will soon be published in the San Diego website.
Alberto's work "A Brighter Future" was a finalist in the Speech Contest sponsored by Bank
of America. Alberto's painting was also a district finalist in the Reflections Art Competition
sponsored by the Chula Vista Elementary School District PTA.
Luigi, son of Albert and Emiluz Pascasio Reyes, is also the recipient of the Masonic Award given to
only six students in his graduating class at McMillin Elementary School in Chula Vista.

The Silver Anniversary Fiesta
by Joey Casiano and Arnel Orcino
The San Diego San Antonian Silver Anniversary kicked off on September 3rd with the coronation of three
beautiful daughters of San Antonio town mates. These young ladies were honored with cultural
dances, music and line dances performed by talented San Antonians who all seemed took energy
pills to display their dance skills non-stop.
On the following day, a picnic was held at the Admiral Baker Field attended by a few hundred San Antonians
from California, as well as from Hawaii, Washington, Virginia, and, Illinois. There was an
abundance of food, drinks, and sweets including generous donation of three roasted pigs or
lechon. It was an envy of other picnickers in the area.
As part of the San Antonio-San Diego Silver Anniversary, the 1st San Antonio Golf Open was held on Monday,
September 5, 2005 at the Admiral Baker’s South Course, a par 72, 6500 yards. The Tiger Woods
and Phil Mickelsons "wanna be’s" included Jun Gonzales, Rudy Aquisap, John Ventura, Allan
Manangan, Johnny Caceres, Ben Maggay, Ted Delgado, Joey Casiano, Arnel Orcino, and a couple of
guests from Los Angeles. These golfers were hacking away at the golf ball trying to hit it
flushed and land the ball at the intended target area for a chance to score a par or better.
It was a day of camaraderie amongst the golfers and the hackers, re-acquainting the "adings and the
manongs" with old town mates. Some of the players came out for a good exercise, and for others,
a chance to share their collectible "Ilokano jokes." Overall, it was a competitive and
entertaining day, marked by Johnny Caceres' jokes, Rudy Aquisap's putting clinics, and Arnel
Orcino's 280-yards drive on the 18th hole, 340-par 4. The golfers' competitive spirits further
surfaced when Jun Gonzales challenged golfers in his group to a "closest to the hole" contest on
two Par 3 holes.
A quarter from each player was collected for a grand total of $1.25. With that amount of cash at stake,
the golfers displayed their pure ball striking and pulled out their favorite irons to give it
their best shots. Arnel Orcino's 7-iron shot on hole number 8 landed three feet away and
one-putted for a birdie. The second contest was on the Par 3 -16th hole easily won by Joey
Casiano who was the only golfer to have shot the ball on the green and eventually finishing with
a par. Johnny Caceres stated, "This is good therapy, we need to do this more often!"
Hopefully other golfers from beloved San Antonio will find their competitive spirits and join the San
Antonio Hall of Fame pioneers or should we say "Hall of Hackers" for another round of golf in
the near future. For those willing to join future games, please contact Joey Casiano at (619)
556-8078 and Arnel Orcino at (619) 395-7174. See you all on the golf course.

Here, There, and Everywhere...
By Chi Padua
Please email Kingpachee@cox.net to share important transitions in your lives like – births, anniversaries,
weddings, retirements, graduation, and, other announcement. You may also contact any SASDCI
Officers. During Officers' Meetings, I pass around a blank sheet where the officers would
scribble the events/happenings that they think need to be shared to the general membership.
BIRTHS
Jason Asanas
Jason Asanas is the new addition to the growing family of Lolo Frank and Lola Jemima Asanas
of National City . Baby Jason was born on March 6 to lucky parents Jasmine Asanas and Michael
Monks.
Mr. and Mrs. Damian Erese awarded 500 Pesos each to all First and Second Honors in all

Birthday Celebrants
Patrick Albino Minas, 18 APR
Patrick Albino Minas turned 8 on April 18. He is a second grader at Shoal Creek Elementary in Carmel
Mountain Ranch. Patrick is the son of Frank and Josie Minas.
Conching Pascasio, 6 APR
The ripe old age of 73 just suits her fine for Auntie Conching Pascasio (born April 6, 1933) is proud to
tell everyone her age simply because she doesn't look it. This very active officer of the
SASDCI looks not a day over 60. Fact: we do need her to take care of the Merienda for the
Mayflower Festival but that doesn’t mean what is written is not true. Fact: since this
association's infancy, A. Conching has been in the forefront of every Food Committee in almost
all the San Antonian events.
Long live her "starter" – the special ingredient for her special bread that feeds the hungry officers
during meetings and potlucks! Long live Auntie Conching!
Andrei Juris Reyes, 28 MAR
Andrei Juris or YURI Pascasio-Reyes turned only two last March 28 but this precocious little one can
give any Ilocano adult a lesson on chair, bench, and stool; and he will never call tricycle a
bicycle. He cried when he watched "Finding Nemo" for the first time. He cheered for Team "U.S.A"
during the last Winter Olympics and his favorite song is "The Humps" by the Black Eyed Peas.
Yuri indeed called his veggies "vegetables" when he was only 1 1/2 years and did I mention he
calls his favorite aunt: Pachi?

The San Antonians family lost a few members the past months. April is National Poetry Month and the following poem is dedicated to the bereaved families - Editor.
Miss Me, But Let Me Go (unknown author)
When I come to the end of the road,
and the sun has set for me.
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room.
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little – but not too long,
and not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that was once shared.
Miss me, but let me go.
For this is a journey we all must take, and each must go alone.
It’s all a part of the master’s plan, a step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart, go to the friends we know.
Bear your sorrow in good deeds. Miss me, but let me go.

Note from the President
by Ernie Padua, Jr.
The "Alay kay Inay" Talent Show and Flores de Mayo presented by SASDCI last 2004 was a success that we
hope to duplicate that this coming Mother's Day on Sunday, May 14th 2006. This event is a part
of our Silver Jubilee celebration and this year’s theme will encompass a tribute to
Grandmothers, our Mother land, and Mother Earth, as well. This is one important occasion where
the "future leaders" of this organization show their exceptional abilities and demonstrate to the
beloved women in their lives their appreciation in a special way.
Election Year 2006 is going to be held on July 8th from 10 P.M. – 5 P.M. at the Adm. Baker Field.
Co-Chairs of the Committee on Elections are Mina Maggay and Alice Peregrino. It is important
that you pay your membership dues ($5.00) to be able to receive your "election ballot."
Induction of Officers Dinner and Dance
September 2, 2006 at 6:00 P.M.
Holiday Inn at the Embarcadero
Tickets: $45.00 (Prime Rib Dinner)
Theme: Oldies but Goodies
It will be a lot of fun to listen and dance to the music of the 50's, 60's, 70's, and the 80's.
Before you call Amvet or the Salvation Army, make sure that you are not throwing away fashionable
clothes from those years when Sinatra crooned or the Beatles rock! Suggested attire for the
occasion will be fashion from those bygone years when Engelbert Humperdinck popularized "Release
Me" and "Quando, Quando, Quando." You may prefer the Disco fashion craze of the 70's or the
80's. Whatever your preference the important thing is to plan on joining and making this final
party in commemoration of our Silver Jubilee truly a B-L-A-S-T from the P-A-S-T! Special Award
will be given to the couple wearing the most authentic fashion or costume.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone in all the abovementioned festivities as we strive to
stay solid and consistently effective in the years to come.
~ Ernie Padua
