President's Message

Greetings to all kababayans, townmates and friends.

Our term as officers is almost at its end. A lot has happened from our 30th Anniversary celebration. I want to thank the officers for their devotion and hard work to the organization. This past term has been a milestone for our association.

What have we accomplished?
We were able to increase our attendance at our annual events. The continued support through scholarship and funding for the three high schools: Yangco High School, Luzon Technical Institute and San Miguel High school. Our next project is to expand our assistance to the most recent High Schools which are San Miguel Annex and Angeles High School. The support is in the mode of school supplies such as science and home economic equipment, notebooks, pencils and other miscellaneous items.

What has been our most recent project?
We funded a welding project. The trainers and trainees were very thankful for our humanitarian program. We were able to assist, with funding, equipment and materials for the students. The class graduated 18 students. They each received a welding certificate to start their profession. It is gratifying when we (SASDCI) are able to support education for our town mates. Assisting is core for the SASDCI association.

What can members do to help?
"PROJECT SCHOOL SUPPLIES" At our upcoming mid-summer potluck picnic, I would like to encourage all of you to donate new or gently used back packs, school equipment, sports equipment, notebooks, crayons, pencils and anything that might be useful. These items will be collected, sorted and sent to schools in need. We will have a series of mini events to raise funds. Please keep informed by calling one of the officers.

When is our next annual event?
The summer picnic is on July 14th at Admiral Baker Field (Gazebo 2). I would like to personally invite all members and friends to join me for a fun and enjoyable time. Please remember that this is an election year. Participate and make your vote count. As mentioned, we will be collecting school and sports supplies/equipment at this event. See you all there.

The annual dinner-dance is back at Holiday-Inn by the Bay located in downtown San Diego. I am inviting everyone to join us. As always this is the highlight of the year. The highpoint of the night is “Red Carpet” celebration of special couples in assisting us with our fundraising campaign. This will be a night full of entertainment and festivities.

What is in the works?
Highly requested, our Facebook page is under construction. Stay tune for more details.

On behalf of the officers, we would like to convey that it has been a pleasure and a privilege representing the organization in the capacity as officers.

Thank you for your continued support,
Allan Manangan, SASDCI President

Important Dates to Remember

Members and friends of SASDCI are encouraged to mark their calendars for these important events:

JULY 14, 2012 – ELECTION POTLUCK PICNIC – at Admiral Baker Field, Gazebo #2.

SEPTEMBER 1 – INDUCTION BALL will be at HOLIDAY INN ON THE BAY

SEPTEMBER 2 – ANNUAL LABOR DAY PICNIC

For this year’s Dinner-Dance, the officers have decided to put-up a FORMAL event that will highlight the best in each San Antonian. It will be like the OSCAR’s or Emmy’s if you will. It will be a “Black Tie” event as the red carpet will be rolled-out by Holiday Inn as SASDCI, once more, has reserved its four ballrooms just for this event.

Be AWED. Be DAZZLED. Be Entertained. While each of us present that night will be Stars in our own rights, the Lead Roles will be given to some Beautiful Couples willing to help us in our fundraising campaign. These elegant and generous couples will be introduced during our JULY Potluck Picnic.

My Family and Friends Who are Helping Me Help Others
by Chi Padua

Looking back during my elementary years in San Antonio, my school was big, classrooms were roomy, and textbooks were decent. Years passed and in this era of hi-tech phones, tablets, computers, and other possible sources of information, the public schools in San Antonio seemed to have not progressed as far as educational materials are concerned. In fact, they seemed to have gone back in time when books were not available to the school children.

When I said books, I was referring to the textbooks that teachers and students rely on to tackle the grade level education required. Photo 1 and 2 prove that these textbooks that the classrooms are using now are not the prototypical educational materials that the students should be utilizing. As one school principal relayed to me during my last visit at their very congested school, textbooks as educational materials are delivered sporadically and abnormally. It is not uncommon that in a classroom of 30 students, only five textbooks will be delivered at the beginning of the school year. But what I find strange and peculiar is when another five textbooks on the same subject arrives for the same class a few months later, and it’s totally a different book! Pity the teacher! How awful for the students!

Since 2007, I have collected books and used school supplies from the friendly and generous teachers from schools close to my home. It started as a small recycling project – seeing that the discarded books and supplies are still serviceable for the San Antonio school children. Sometimes I also purchased books from the Friends of the Library sites around the city. In 2008, books came as far as San Gabriel Valley. For the past five years, the circle of generous teachers grew and shipping expenses swelled as well. My supportive husband covered the shipping for most of the 77 boxes that I mailed last year to San Antonio while other family members helped with a few.

Eleven elementary schools and one Day Care Center received items that the teachers and principals described as valuable items in the education of the children of San Antonio. The last of the educational materials collected last year were finally mailed last March 31 (in 3 jumbo boxes and 4 smaller boxes). A used printer was also included in the shipment along with Science Experiment Kits for Pundakit Elem. School.

My goal is to be able to help these public schools by donating more books and educational materials to use in the classrooms. By hosting a Charity Dinner which coincided with my sister Flora’s 55th birthday, Ernie and I were able to raise $ 788 that will go towards the mailing of the materials/books that I hope to be able to collect by the end of this school year. The birthday celebrant pledged to donate at least $ 500 that will go towards my sKool Aid Project.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my generous family and friends who supported the Charity Dinner Event held last April 14 and are truly HELPING ME HELP OTHERS:
